A Great Night At Edge Green Street

Players and officials at Ashton Town can look back with satisfaction to a great night at Edge Green Street last week.

Town played host to a strong Liverpool FC side in the Liverpool Senior Cup on Wednesday, and despite losing 4-0 there were plenty of positives to take from the night.

The likes of Jay Spearing and Damien Plessis were in the Reds line up and both played their part as Liverpool produced an impressive display.

Swede Alex Kacaniklic opened the scoring and Jordy Brouwer, Jay Spearing and Emmanuel Mendy added further goals as John McMahon's team reached the last four of a competition they won last season.

Town had their chances in the first half with winger Christian Baxby striking a fine long range effort, of which Liverpool keeper Chris Oldfield tipped over the bar.  Scott McNair capped off a fine display against the Premier League side by receiving the MOM award, topping off a great evening for the semi pro club, as 480 fans enjoyed a great night of entertainment.

"The biggest thing for me was the attitude the players showed, which was first class," John McMahon told Steve Hunter at Liverpoolfc.tv.

"When you come to grounds like this you have got to work hard and compete then let your ability take over, which it did. The lads were fantastic and the commitment was fantastic.

"Jay led by example. He is a fantastic lad to have with the squad because everything he does is an example to everyone. Plessis was terrific and showed a great attitude."
