With apparently no let up in the freezing weather conditions, League Fixtures Secretary John Reid is grappling with the task of rescheduling the many fixtures that have been lost over the past few weeks.
As John explained, the situation is concerning but has been helped by the fact that the number of postponements up to early December had been relatively low.
"At the last Management Committee meeting in mid-December, I was asked if I was happy with the fixtures situation at that point and I said I was. Since then of course, we've hit the bad weather", he said.
"At the moment, if the weather suddenly picked up we'd be OK. The problem is that I've heard plenty of predictions about how long this bad weather will go on for, and very few suggestions on when it will end. I've taken the view this week that it's a waste of everyone's time scheduling fixtures for next week, with the weather forecasts as they are at the moment.
"Every day I'm looking at where we can slot fixtures in, and working out different permutations. There is another Management Committee meeting next week, and I will discuss various options with the rest of the committee then.
"For example, we could get rid of replays in the League Challenge Cup, like we have done in the Division One Trophy. We could also look at having just one game in the semi finals of both competitions instead of over two legs.
"For league games we would need permission from the FA to extend the season to May 8th, but at present Division One is scheduled to finish on April 24th so there is a bit of leeway there.
"But the most important thing is that we have a level playing field for all the clubs, and that we don't give someone an unfair advantage. You have to remember that there are promotion and relegation issues to consider, and in Division One league placings determine eligibility for playing in the FA Cup, so it's very important that you don't give one club an advantage over another".
